Review: Naked 2 Basics

Hello lovelies!

IMG_2473.JPG

I am ordering the Naked on the Run palette from Urban Decay today, but thought I would also do a post on the Naked 2 Basics for comparison when I get my order in!

I got the Naked 2 Basics because I was looking for something that was more portable than the full sized Naked palettes. I liked that the Basics are neutral still, with this one being more cool toned than the original Naked Basics palette.

The mirror is a nice size for a travel palette as it takes up the entire top portion of the palette. I was hoping the whole thing would be slightly more compact as I have a pretty small makeup bag. It is hard to open, but I actually like that a little bit since that means it doesn’t randomly pop open when being tousled around in my makeup bag on a daily basis.

IMG_2476.JPG

The shades are Skimp, Stark, Frisk, Cover, Primal, and Undone.

I swatched them in order on my hand below. These are done with my finger using one pass, no primer. IMG_2478.JPG

As you can see, Skimp and Stark are barely visible on my pale skin. Skimp does give a bit of a sheen and both would be pretty highlights on darker complexions.

Swatching with a finger, the colors came out chalky and dragged horribly which left a splotchy application.  I did go back and redo 2 of them with brushes so you can see the difference. The swatch on the bottom toward my wrist is Primal, and Undone is the vertical swatch on the left. You can see them compared to the original swatches done with fingers (Undone with finger is top swatch, Primal with finger is 2nd swatch from top).IMG_2479.JPG

As you can see, the use of brushes made a HUGE difference in the way that these applied, so I would make sure you have a set of quality travel sized brushes available to use with this palette.

The fallout though is pretty bad on these. I took a photo of Cover’s fallout after I swiped a brush through it twice to do my eyes one morning. No bueno. That is a lot of wasted product over the life of the palette and if I were using this on the go as I had intended, chances are I would be getting this all over my clothes, car, etc. IMG_2480.JPG

If I would have known at the time that Naked on the Run was going to be coming out, I would have saved my cash and just held out for that. Here’s to hoping that I have better luck with that one as the travel palette I’ve been hoping for!

Did anyone else have better luck with the Naked 2 Basics shadows than I did? Let me know in the comments below!

Review: Lorac Mega PRO Palette

Hey guys!

As you all know the holidays are coming up. If you missed the Lorac Mega Pro palette, people are still putting them up on ebay. If you start watching now, I’m sure you can find one at a reasonable price. However, this item was a Limited Edition from Lorac and Amazon, so it is not available through the official retailers anymore.

I figured I would still do a quick review though in case anyone was debating buying themselves a little something, or putting one of these babies on their Christmas list!

lorac3a

The palette itself is quite a bit smaller than I had anticipated it being. It was roughly the size of the Vice palettes from Urban Decay but thinner. It is a sturdy cardboard, and the top portion can be flipped all the way back. It also has a good sized mirror. It might be a little bit big for travel if you are taking a shorter trip.

lorac1

Here is a closer photo of the shades and layout of the palette. The top half is predominantly matte shades, although the 2nd row is more of satin than true mattes. The bottom half is very similar but has much more shimmer. I feel like the first two rows could be laid over the bottom two and you would have almost the same colors in matte and shimmer in most cases (see Mulberry and Merlot). There is, however, still some variation and I do like that I can use this to add drama with the bottom half or keep simple and clean daytime looks with the upper half.

lorac2

Shades in order

Row 1: Cream, Fawn, Camel, Sepia, Dusty Plum, Orchid, Mulberry, Espresso

Row 2: White, Khaki, Brown, Stone, Lilac, Wisteria, Gray, Black

Row 3: Opal, Sand, Copper, Sienna, Apricot, Blush, Merlot, Indigo

Row 4: Vanilla, Cashmere, Smokey Topaz, Dusty Rose, Granite, Maroon, Deep Teal, Caviar

Swatches:

lorac8

Swatches of Row 1 and 2 in order. On bare skin in natural light. Row 1: Cream, Fawn, Camel, Sepia, Dusty Plum, Orchid, Mulberry, Espresso Row 2: White, Khaki, Brown, Stone, Lilac, Wisteria, Gray, Black

Cream is a pale warm beige. Nothing too crazy, would be a good highlight for someone with a bit deeper skin tone.

Fawn is  a warm peachy beige.

Camel is just as it sounds, a tan (camel-y) color.

Sepia is a brown with warm undertones. It is more of a medium shade and has better color payoff than the Camel or Fawn.

Dusty Plum is muted plum. I wish it was a cool shade but sadly is a warm tone (but still lovely).

Orchid is a pinky shade. Finally a cool toned shade, but I’m not a huge lover of pinks so even though this one is a purpley pink, it is one that likely won’t see much love from me.

Mulberry is cool tone berry. This one can have some problems with dragging/blending so you need to have a little more time to work with this one and I would REALLY suggest using a primer!

Espresso is dark brown. Nothing too crazy, but I do like this one for the outer corners when I am doing a softer daytime look.

White is plain white. This one is kind of chalky and I probably won’t use this one a ton.

Khaki is a grayish brown. I like the slightly satiny finish to this one.

Brown is a matte medium brown. Another staple shade that you probably already own in a few variations, but it’s nice to have it easily accessible for when you are creating a look with this palette.

Stone is a purpley gray. This is one of my favorite shades in the palette after actually using it a few times. The purple tones to it make it more interesting than a lot of the other gray shades in my collection.

Lilac is lavender. This one was chalky and did not have very good color payoff at all. My least favorite out of the whole palette.

Wisteria is about the opposite of stone. This one is a purple with a bit of gray added. I like to use these two to create just a bit of contrast but stil have a very subtle day look.

Gray is not gray. I’m not really sure why they even called it that. If anything, stone is more of a gray than this is. This is more of a blue. It’s a grayish blue, but still.

Black is a plain matte black. Again chances are you already have this in your collection, but it comes off more of a charcoal than a true black. I also had some issues with blending with this one.

Let’s move on to the next 2 rows! The shimmers!

These are the shimmers. I took 2 photos under each lighting with my arm turned, in order for you to fully see each swatch. These are taken in soft indoor lighting with no primer. I tried to make one set of swatches the focal point of each photo. The ones that are complete swatches (not cut off at the ends) are the focus of each photo.

lorac14lorac13

Swatches of Row 3 under natural light and indoor lighting.

Row 3: Opal, Sand, Copper, Sienna, Apricot, Blush, Merlot, Indigo

Opal is much prettier than I had thought it would be judging from the pan. It is a white with intense gold shimmer.

Sand is a light champagne. I reach for this one quite a bit as a highlight.

Copper is a metallic-y reddish brown shade.

Sienna is a softer brown. Another good one just to have if you are looking for a little something without going too over the top.

Apricot is bright peachy orange. It was MUCH brighter swatched than I thought it would be and would really help to brighten a look.

Blush is a light frosty pink. It wasn’t as buttery as some of the other shads.

Merlot is my FAVORITE shade in the bunch. Its a medium metallic wine shade with a bit of shimmer. Goes on very easily and blends well.

Indigo is blue black with a ton of micro glitter, but the glitter is VERY hard to see once applied.  With a more intense (sticky) primer, the glitter may take hold better and be more visible, which would make this another favorite.

lorac17lorac12

Row 4 under natural light and indoor lighting.

Vanilla, Cashmere, Smokey Topaz, Dusty Rose, Granite, Maroon, Deep Teal, Caviar

Vanilla is more frosted off white. This is another I prefer to use for a highlight or the inner corners.

Cashmere is a softer metallic light tan/off white. I use this on my brow bone when I want something with a hint of shimmer but not a ton of color, but the light color would show on someone with a darker complexion.

Smokey Topaz is bronzy brown with a bit of glitter and is pretty pigmented.

Dusty Rose is brownish pink. Another shade you may already own.

Granite is another frequently used shad for me. Dark brown with some shimmer/metallic finish that is super easy to blend and work with.

Maroon is brownish red. I was hoping with would be a deeper TRUE maroon (a bit closer to the merlot), but its more of a red.

Deep Teal is another beautiful shade. It’s a darkened cool teal. This is one of the shades that initially interested me and it did not disappoint.

Caviar is more of a true black than the ‘Black’ shade in this palette. It is not matte, but when I want a black, I reach for this.

Overall, I would absolutely buy this palette again. It was $59 and while I do wish more shades were cool toned, but I find that the warm shades here are still okay for me to work with.  It does have quite a few browns and whites, but on the skin they are all different enough where I was not disappointed, and there are enough unique shades that I would have gladly paid more for to make this palette worth it for me!

Review: Urban Decay Pulp Fiction Palette

Hey guys!

IMG_1986

The Urban Decay Pulp Fiction Palette just dropped in price, so I thought I’d review it for any of you who may be debating purchasing it.

The packaging on the palette is very in theme with the movie. The inside of the box is red with white blood-like spatter. It is a sturdy cardboard with a decent sized mirror inside.  The palette design is well presented, although I feel it is VERY bulky for the size of the small shadows inside.

IMG_1987

IMG_1991

It also comes with a look card and a small brush as seen above. I love to color of the brush as it again keeps with the Pulp Fiction theme.

I swatched this and was not thoroughly impressed. Some shades lack any kind of pigmentation, while the others just looked so… plain on my skin. Don’t get me wrong, they might be nice, matte browns but for the $32 I spent at the time, I was looking for something with a little more to it.

IMG_2347

I do have all 5 shades swatched on my hand above… but can you even see them? I know I’m pale but come on now!

Overall, I like the movie and the theme of the packaging. I would use this as some daily neutrals to pair with some of my other UD shadows, but I wouldn’t pay $32 for this again. I think the $16 price tag that it is on sale for now is much more reasonable. I would pick one up still at that price!

What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!

Review/Haul: Kiko

Hi guys!

I have been MIA for a bit, partially because of an extended vacation with the husband. You better believe that while we were gone I got some new makeup to share with you!

KIKO is a brand that is found in Europe and the US (in NYC and soon Miami). I hadn’t really heard of it before except on facebook groups because one of their eye shadows is a dupe for MAC’s Whisper of Gilt which is going for $100+ USED online! Crazy, right?

kiko2

Anyway, let me show you all the things I got!

Now one thing that I’m not crazy about with this brand is that most items are just numbered instead of having names for the shades.

First I picked up  Eye Shadows in shades 118,152,172

kiko3

152 is a pretty plum purple

172 is a grey

118 is a champagne

kiko5

Swatched on hand (152, 118, 172)

kiko6

The colors are pretty pigmented with the exception of the champagne color, 118. The pigmentation is not horrible, you just need a second swipe and you are good to go! The shadows are really big for the price. i’m not too crazy about the clear plastic domed lid on the packaging. It just feels cheap to me and they can be hard to get open.

Next is Sun Lover’s Blush. I believe this is a limited edition item. I got it on sale there and was really intrigued by the powder itself. Below is the box and packaging…

kiko7

I grabbed the shade Atlantic Camellia. It is a bright watermelon pinky blush. The other side is a swirl of bronze and baby blue. When the whole thing is swirled together, it is a watermelon shade with an almost opalescent finish.

Again, not crazy about the packaging on these. The compact is about 3/4 inch tall, but almost all of that height is from the lid. The portion with the blush itself is fairly thin. The lid does have a mirror inside, but I just can’t see this being very travel friendly because of the bulky packaging.

kiko8

I grabbed some more of the LE items, including the Street Fashion Eyeshadow Palette .

kiko9

I got 02 Addictive Song. It comes with 5 shadow shades and has a pretty large mirror in the lid.

kiko10

The shades do not have names or numbers, but the swatches are below. They don’t quite match the placement in the palette, but as you can see the deepest brown is below the other colors in my swatches (it is the top color in the palette). Then we have the plum shade, rosey pink, fawn, and white. All of the shades are matte and again I found that some of the shades are more pigmented than others. I do like the darker shades as they have great payoff (all of the swatches are one swipe in pan and one on hand, no primer). The lighter shades aren’t as pigmented but can be built up.

kiko11

Glow Touch for Lips and Cheecks (as the box says haha) comes in a circular tin. I got 103 Heavy Honeysuckle.

kiko12

This is the WORST packaging I have ever experienced on a product EVER. Period. I love this stuff but I literally struggled with getting the lid off of this for 5 minutes before I used a knife to pry the damn thing off. Somehow the lid gets suctioned off and you can’t get it to release unless you pry the side to equalize the pressure and get rid of the vacuum that’s created when you pull. It would be much better if it were a threaded lid. You get a TON of product though and maybe as I use it, it will become easier to open.

Maybe my nose is just messed up right now, but this does not smell at all like honeysuckle. It smells like brownies to me haha.

kiko13

Swatched in shade to show how opaque it applies. I have found that it is a bit drying when used alone on the lips, so will have to see how it performs as a cheek stain.

kiko14

Rock Attraction Blush in 03 Crossroad Pink

kiko15

This has the same style packaging as the quad, but when you open it, it has an imprint of a jean pocket in it which I think it cute and adds to the aesthetic of the blush.

kiko16

This looks super bright in the pan, but when swatched it becomes a more sheer, very cool toned pink.

kiko17

This is Glamorous Eye Pencil in 407 which is a navy shade. It is on the harder side, but can be blended and smudged for the desired effect.

kiko18

Kiss Balm in Strawberry was a register impulse purchase (they were using it as their add on by offering it to each customer that got up there). but is probably my favorite thing that I got! It does on really gel like and is super bright! I got the strawberry, but wish I would have grabbed other shades/flavors.

kiko19

Hard to see the brightness in the swatch, but on the lips it is a bright pinky-red.

kiko20

Overall I got everything for great prices and most were on clearance. Im happy the products are made in Italy since that is where I bought them. Some of the items lack a bit in pigmentation or packaging, but you can’t beat this brand for the price and there are some definite winners here.

If you can get your hands on this brand, I say what are you waiting for?

Have you tried Kiko?

Haulin’: Small Ulta Haul – June

Hi guys!

My mom and I went to do some exchanges at Ulta today, so I thought I would show you what I picked up while we were there!

I did get one item at a local hair salon and NOT at Ulta, but I included it in this post so that I wouldn’t have to do a separate one for that too!

I returned a lip liner that was Ulta brand, a glitter top coat Ulta brand eyeshadow, and my Stila BB Trio that I reviewed recently. Instead, I grabbed:

Bliss Facial in a Box – $12

Ulta Eyeshadow in Lustre -$4 on sale

NYX Chunky Dunk in Pink Bikini-$5.99

NYX Rouge Cream Blush in Natural -$6.99 (then had a coupon for 20% off one item, so came down to $5.59)

At the hair salon, I got the Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Trial Kit -$15

20140605-184553-67553182.jpg

This is a swatch of the Chunky Dunk Lipie (is it just me who can’t stand that word? lol)

20140605-184554-67554085.jpg

This is the Ulta shadow is Lustre. It’s very pretty and subtle for an all over wash of color when I want a quick easy and effortless look. I’ve had great luck with Ulta shadows in the past. I only returned the one mentioned above because the description was off from the actual product (I bought that one online).

20140605-184944-67784370.jpg

The Bliss Facial in a Box kit was an impulse purchase at the register. It has a mask, Peel and a treatment all in small sizes to try. The exact contents are: Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask, That’s Incredi-‘peel’, and Triple Oxygen Ex-‘glow’-sion. I’ll let you know how I like these once I take them for a test run!

20140605-185330-68010098.jpg

Here is the NYX Rouge Cream Blush in Natural. It’s very creamy and easy to blend. I also like that it is pigmented enough to show up easily, but not so much so that it’s going to look crazy on my extra-pale skin.

20140605-185329-68009171.jpg

This is the stuff I grabbed for the salon. I have heard great things about the pillow proof system, but I didn’t want to pay 15-20 apiece and then have it potentially not work for me. These should give me just a couple uses, but I’d gladly pay $15 to try them out than almost invest almost $40 to hate them, and not be able to return them because this is a small business.

20140605-185455-68095881.jpg

Have you had any luck with this system? Any great finds at your local Ulta lately? Let me know in the comments!

Haulin’: Ulta -March 2014

Hi there guys! Hope you are all enjoying your St. Patrick’s Day! I made this haul at the beginning in the month and thought I’d share now since ULTA is having some great deals right now! They also have their 21 Days of Beauty that is currently going on with a new promo every day for 3 weeks, so make sure you check that out!

214

OPI TXTure Effect -$9.99

This set comes with a limited edition liquid sand polish in My Current Crush and a base coat. Liquid Sand and other texture polishes are meant to be worn without a top coat. The liquid sand is a really pretty purple shade with a hint of glitter that will peek out from the texture. It was $14.95, but I got it on sale for $9.99 which I thought was pretty good since they are 2 full sized bottles.

215

Stila Color Me Glossy -$28

This set was not technically on sale, but is a huge bang for your buck! It comes with 9 click pen glosses that are a little smaller than the ones you would buy individually (.05 oz vs .08) but the individual ones run $2 EACH, so this set is a steal. Inside it also has the pens packaged in smaller sets of 3 so you can give a set or two as a gift and keep a few for yourself if you wanted to! The colors are a nice range too of shimmers, sheers, and bold colors.

227

NYX Glam Eye Shadow in Sable- $2.49

This is a really pretty dark chocolatey brown shade with a bunch of silver glitter. Originally $4.99 but purchased for  $2.49, Sable is a great and inexpensive addition to my makeup bag! I always forget how much I really like NYX especially considering how much I can get for so cheap!!

216

The New Black Demi Lavato Studded 3 Piece Kit – $9.99

I picked this up because it was on sale (originally $14) and I wanted to see how it compares to the Ciate set that I bought that is very similar. They both come with silver balls to cover your nail in after you put on some polish, but the ones in the Ciate kit appear to be a bigger size than the tiny ones in this kit. I’m interested to see how the size affects the wear time of each.

221

NYX BB Cream in Light -$12.99

I had to include this picture of my cat, G (aka G Lady) trying to assist me with my photos for the blog :). Below is a cat-less photo. I just purchased a $40 BB cream from another brand at Sephora literally minutes before I  went to Ulta and found this (I know, I have a problem). This is a very similar texture and when using the tester it seemed like their light shade would be light enough for me which is usually impossible to do. If it is a tad darker in other lights, I can also just sheer it out if I’m looking for less coverage, or I can add a powder over it.

223

Here it is without the box. The product inside is very big for only being about $13!

224

ULTA Nail Polish in Love Fern -$6

In person, this polish looks like shamrock green and turquoise had a baby. I love that I can’t quite tell if it’s one or the other (or neither for that matter). It’s glitter in a clear base, so I like that it’s a bit different than anything else that I own (and I have a LOT of nail polish!).

ULTA Blush in Afterglow -$7

I’m assuming that this is Ulta’s version of NARS Orgasm and is meant to be a dupe. I have not used this long enough yet but it seems very similar and with the MUCH higher price-point on the NARS, this might be a better option even if you do need to build the color a bit more!

ULTA Lip Crayon in Coral Kiss -$8

I was hoping that this would be more nourishing on my lips than it actually is. I like the color and I would wear this over a balm, but I really would prefer to get a tinted lip butter next time in a similar packaging since I like the ease of putting this on and the twist up style. (Clinique has nice ones)

225

China Glaze in Whirled Away -$4.99

I was much more excited about this when I bought it than when I actually used it. I’m hoping it will grow on me. I really like the hex glitter in white and black, but there are also long skinny bar like glitters in black that I did not see int he bottle that I am really not a fan of. I’m hoping to find a color that this will look really nice over, but again I was much more excited about it when I thought it was just 2 different colors of hex glitter.

229

BONUS: Ulta Spring GWP (retail of $88)

Now I would never pay $88 for the bag and its contents, but I did think this was a very nice (and generous) GWP. I got it for spending $15+ on Ulta brand items.

You get the bag itself along with all kinds of items inside. The brushes that are shown wrapped in plastic in the picture are honestly throw away brushes. I will probably give these to one of my cousins to use with their kid’s play makeup.

The super shiny lip gloss in Illusion is a smaller tube but a very pretty, girly color.

Next is a dual ended liner in Deep Brown and Black. This liner is a little smaller as well and would be great for travelling when you don’t want to being both a brown and black full sized liner.

A full sized Voluptuous Volume mascara is next. While I have not yet tried this, it looks on the outside like the packaging for Covergirl’s Lash Blast, but thinner. I’m wondering if this is on purpose and therefore if they have similar formulas (and results).

Sweet Cheeks cheek color comes in the set and it is a cooler toned pink blush with a lot of silver shimmer to it. I’m excited to try this because while I like the shimmer in Orgasm and After Glow, I like silver much better on my cool toned skin!

Super Shiny Lip Butter in Vienna is not my favorite color, but more what I was looking for in terms of nourishing to my lips. It’s still not as effective as a balm would be, but it is much better than the crayon. I really wish they would have included a color like Rome instead, but free is free so I’m not complaining!

Flawless Prime primer and a small polish in Fuchsiamania are in the bag but these are pretty self explanatory and nothing too crazy.

3 eyeshadow quads were included as well:

-Chic Quad – Sahara Sand, Sunkissed, Mosaic, and Glittering Sand – a mix bolder primary colors and one taupey neutral

-Classic Quad – Seashell, In the Buff, Silk, Social Climber – shimmery and satiny champagnes and browns

-Dramatic Quad – Iceland, Twilight, Lock & Key, After Hours – shimmery purple, grey, and white with a matte grey to pull the quad together

I hope you enjoyed my little haul and don’t forget to checkout the 21 Days of Beauty at Ulta and share what you are hauling this month!
