Review: MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Collection

Hey guys!

A few weeks ago, I stayed up in great anticipation to grab some items from the MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show collection!

I changed my mind about 15 times as to what items I was going to grab. It didn’t help too that the launch was plague with issues. MAC was supposed to release this collection on Sept 29th. Then word on the internet was that it wouldn’t be out until the 30th (so some people wound up staying up 2 nights in a row). Then MAC tweeted a statement saying it would be out around noon. They missed this deadline as well and when the collection finally launched, they were missing one of the most anticipated items – Frank-N-Furter lipstick. Rumor on the street is that there was a problem with one of the FNF batches, which is why the entire collection was delayed.

Anyway, once I was FINALLY able to place my order, I went as quickly as I could. This was no time to look around. I felt like I was that crazy person during Black Friday that just throws EVERYTHING in their cart and runs to the register. lol.

The packaging on all of the items that I got is amazing! The picture below is of the inside of the blush box, but they all have this image of the characters inside!

I grabbed the Crazed Imagination limited edition blush because it was a pretty purpley-bronze shade on my monitor. When I swatched this, I was VERY disappointed. I was aware that it was sheertone but there is literally almost NO coor payoff on these, even though I am super pale. It was also more on the brown/bronze side than I had been hoping for.

My sister and I happened to stop at a MAC store the day of the in-store release and while I was there I showed her how poor the pigmentation was. The sales woman snarkily told me (because I had just swatched it with my finger and got nothing as far as color payoff) that since people had been rubbing their fingers all over it all day that of course it wouldn’t have any payoff since the oils from everyones hands were all over it. I understand this may be somewhat true, but I replied back that even my BRAND NEW item that I was shipped had poor payoff as well and I walked away. I was a bit irked by it however.

Moving on, the next item was the pigment. This shade was another limited edition shade called ‘It’s Not Easy Having a Good Time’. Again, I’m not sure if I have a monitor issue or not, but this looked like a beautiful plum with a bronze shift. This turned out to be a bronze with a reddish shift. Not bad, but also not something¬† ¬†I was crazy for or would use all the time like I would have had it been the shade I thought it was!

I grabbed some of the blue base red lipsticks since I have pink undertones. The first is ‘Oblivion’ which is very bright and has an almost satiny finish.

RH2

Next is ‘Frank-N-Furter’ which is the one that was much waited on and had the potentially botched batch haha.

This one is a pretty matte and looks like a great go-to fall blue red.

RH3

The Formidable nail polish was the one item that I got because the histeria, lack of sleep, and the craziness of the sale got the best of me. I paniched and picked the shade I liked better, only to find out right after I placed my order that this color in particular is part of their permanent collection and was just shown in the fancu packaging. The only other polish shade was one that was a repromote or limited edition so Bad Fairy is the one that I left behind in the chaos.

The products are all the same quality that we have come to know and love from MAC. I also love that the RHPS graphics on the packaging are on there really well. They aren’t like a cheap sticker that is very easy to scratch off.

Below are some swatches of a few of the items. We have Frank-N-Furter at the top, Oblivion in the middle, and then the Crazed Imagination blush at the bottom. The top photo is in direct sunlight. The one below is the same swatches but in indoor lighting.IMG_2395

Haulin’: The Cosmetics Company Store

I have found a new obsession and its name is the Cosmetics Company Store. I work at a chain retailer and have never heard of this store before I switched to a different location. My mall has a CCS, so out of curiosity I stopped in. I was in love and my wallet immediately began to shed tears for the amount of money that would be left behind in the store.

For those of you who don’t know what a CCS is, it is all legit makeup. It’s all Estee Lauder owned brands and the store is owned by them as well. They basically carry discontinued shades, past collections, and overstock items of brands like Bobbi Brown, Lancome, Clinique, MAC, Smashbox, Bumble & Bumble, etc. Ummm, what? AMAZING, right?

This is all stuff that I hoarded on my first trip in there, and I have more items but I’ll limit this to things from my first haul.

The one thing you need to keep in mind about CCS is that you have to go in looking for “an eyeliner” or “Clinique foundation”(or in other words to browse the different categories. If you go in looking for, let’s say, “Clinique Pore Refining Foundation in Alabaster”, you are almost guaranteed to leave disappointed. They have great items but if you go in for something super specific, they may not have the shade or exact formula you want.

So with that, let’s get rolling! I stuck with a mainly MAC kick on this trip!

MAC Mineralize Eyeshadow in Universal Appeal

-14.75 Compare at 21

This shadow is larger than most single shadows that I own from MAC and a little bit more fun I think. It is a brown, gold, and plum swirl. When you pick up product with your brush, you end up with a slightly shimmery brown shade that is more of a purple in some lights. It looks really good on my hazel eyes!

MAC Studio Finish Concealer in NC15

-12.75 Compare at 18

A pretty basic MAC concealer. It does have an SPF of 35 which is more than most makeup items will have. It is very creamy and easy to use as well.

MAC Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner in Black Swan

-11.25 -Comp at 16

This is possibly my favorite item from this entire haul. It’s a black liner that goes on really smooth and can be smudged a bit. The best thing about this though is the tealish glitter that is in the liner. I LOVE it! The liner is a little bit soft, but nothing that I’m sure a few minutes in my fridge wouldn’t fix.

MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Supremely Confident

-11.25 Comp at 17

This one I did not personally try out, but picked it up while I was out on my haul for my sister. It was a color that she specifically asked for which they happened to have in stock (it was one of about 4 specific items she had asked me to check on, hence the note above about possibly being disappointed on specific things). It is currently still selling for full retail on the MAC website at full retail price.

Bumble and bumble Travel Mending Set (Christmas Giftset)

-28 Compare at around 40

I love this and am a total B and B convert! The sizes of the bottles don’t look that big for the price, but I bought them after getting some foil packet samples of Bumble and bumble products when I placed a Sephora order a few weeks back. Just those little packets got me two uses and I have RIDICULOUSLY thick hair. Seriously, my stylist blocks out extra time to cut and color my hair because I have so much of it! Even on my crazy thick hair, I only need about a pea sized amount of this stuff and it helps to tame all of it! Love!

So you don’t have to do the math, I spent $78. These same products in another store or at MAC.com would have been $112!!

I’m not sure that I get their pricing strategy (ending everything in .25 or .75), but for how much I save when I go there, I don’t care in the slightest!

Have you ever been to a CCS? What did you think? Are you as surprised as I was that it is owned by Estee Lauder and therefore legit and not some sketchy backdoor bootleg makeup store?
